San Martino

Griante

The path that leads to the little church of S.Martino is one of the most classic itineraries around the Lake of Como. You only need to climb 475 metres to enjoy a breathtaking view over the center of the lake. It also represents the first stopover along the route that leads up to the peak of mount Pilone (Sasso di S.Martino), at 862 mt of altitude and believed to be the most beautiful site in the world. The church was erected in the 17th century, and as the legend suggests, it was due to the apparition of a statue of the Virgin, that was said to occur every night on top of the mountain. The church was built on the remains of a military post dating back to Roman times.
